Welcome to Year 4 where you will find Mr Musker (class teacher), Miss Bewley (teaching assistant) and Mrs Welsh (teaching assistant).
Things are slightly different this year at Sylvester Primary Academy but many things are the same and one is that we will endeavour to make Year 4 both enjoyable and educational.
Reading: This year your child will be doing lots of reading in school but we also need your help to boost your child’s reading. Each Monday, your child will bring a reading book home to practise with you. Once they have finished the book send it back on Friday please and we will then send a new book home the following Monday. Furthermore, Sylvester have invested heavily in a fun, interactive learning resource called Reading Eggs. Your child has login details and can access this at home. Please encourage them to do so as they will really benefit from this resource. Contact the school if your child doesn’t know their login details please.
Spellings: Each Monday, your child will bring home their spellings. We would like them to learn their spellings each night before they are tested on a Friday. At this time, your child doesn’t need to return their spellings to school but you could send a photo of the completed spellings on Class Dojo.
Topics: Our Maths topics this term are Place Value, Division, Fractions and Decimals, Time and Measures (Area and Perimeter). Our main topic this Spring is Victorian Working Children. During this topic, Year 4 will be studying what life was like for both rich and poor children in Victorian Britain. Our English lessons will link into this theme as we will be studying two books based upon the Victorians (Climbing in the Dark and The Matchbox Diary). In Science lessons this term, the children will be studying Solids, Liquids and Gases, and Sound. Our Art topic this term is Paul Klee and our PSHE topic is Money, Money, Money.
PE: You child will have a PE lesson on a Monday and Thursday. We would like your child to attend school, on these days, in their PE kit during this time.
Spellings – These will be sent home each Monday and the children will be tested on a Friday. Some spelling lessons will be set on Reading Eggs (look out for Class Dojo updates).
Reading – Each Monday, your child will bring home a new reading book which is to be returned on a Friday. Also your child will be set regular reading lessons on Reading Eggs (look out for updates on Class Dojo).
Weekends - Each Friday, your child will be set a piece of homework (Maths or English). Much of the homework set will be remote and online (Reading Eggs or My Maths). Your child also has a Grammar Workbook which will be used to set homework some weeks (look out for updates on Class Dojo).
Remote Learning Plans: If your child has to isolate for any reason, they will be able to access their learning remotely. Each week, a remote learning plan will be available on the Year 4 class page on the Sylvester website. The plan will reflect what the children are learning in Year 4 that week.
