We hope you have had a wonderful break and are feeling refreshed and ready for an exciting new school year!

We are delighted to welcome our Year 1 children back and are looking forward to a term packed with fun, discovery, creativity and exciting learning opportunities. There is so much to look forward to as the children embark on their next steps in their learning journey.

With an engaging programme of activities, exciting experiences and plenty of opportunities to explore, investigate and learn together, we know our Year 1 children will have a fantastic start to Key Stage 1. We can’t wait to see them grow in confidence, develop new skills, make wonderful memories and embrace every challenge along the way!

Our Year 1 children will enjoy daily phonics lessons, where they will explore sounds, develop their phonics knowledge and build confidence in reading and writing words. Reading will be a key part of the children’s week, with regular opportunities to read with a range of adults. Children will read regularly as part of their phonics sessions, helping them to develop fluency, confidence and a real love of books.

This term in English, we will be exploring a fantastic Literacy Tree unit based on the book ‘Lunba and the Pebble.’ As we journey through the story, the children will have lots of opportunities to develop their reading and writing skills, while thinking about what it means to be a good friend, show kindness and make a positive difference to others.

In Maths, we will begin by exploring place value to 10, helping the children to develop a strong understanding of numbers and what they represent. This important foundation will support their mathematical learning as they progress through the Year 1 curriculum.

Our first Science topic will be seasonal changes and the weather, where children will explore the different seasons and how different the weather will be as the cycle moves on.

Reading books are sent home every Wednesday and are to be returned every Monday.

Homework will be sent home weekly, alternating between English and Maths. Supporting your child with their homework is an important part of their education and is greatly appreciated.

Spellings will go home every Monday and should be practised in preparation for our weekly spelling test each Friday.

Our PE sessions with Mrs Goldson will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Children should come to school wearing their PE kits on both of these days
