Welcome to Year 1

Happy New Year! We hope you have had a fantastic Winter break and that you are feeling refreshed and ready for a great start to the new calendar year. We are looking forward to a wonderful term, full of exciting learning and new opportunities. We have a very busy and engaging term planned for the Year 1 children, and we are confident they will continue to thrive and embrace the challenges of Key Stage 1.
This half term in English, we will be exploring two wonderful Literacy Tree books: Yeti and the Bird, and The Odd Egg. We will continue to have daily Phonics lessons and enjoy a wide variety of stories in class to further develop a deep love of reading. Home reading books are matched to their phonics group, and these will also be sent home weekly every Wednesday. Please do support your child to read at least 3 times a week and don’t forget to sign your child’s reading record for them to be in with the chance of winning our ‘Reader of the Week’ award.
In Maths, we will be focusing on Shape and place value within 20, ensuring the children have a strong understanding of numbers, which will be essential as we move through the rest of the curriculum.
Our Science topic for this half term is Biology – Plants, and we will also continue with our Physics unit on Seasonal Changes which is studied throughout the year.
All children will have access to Reading Eggs, which is an excellent online reading program used across the school to support reading skills, vocabulary, and comprehension. Please encourage your child to use this useful tool at home in short bursts for their continued learning and development.
Homework will be sent home weekly, alternating between English and Maths. Supporting your child with their homework is an important part of their education and is greatly appreciated.
Spellings will go home every Monday and should be practised in preparation for our weekly spelling session each Friday.
Our PE sessions with Mrs Goldson will take place on Tuesday morning and Wednesday afternoon. Children are welcome to come to school in their PE kits on these days.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via ClassDojo or by contacting the school office. While responses may not be immediate during the school day, I will aim to reply as soon as possible.
Thank you for your continued support,
Mrs Williams
